Week 4- Early Christian and Byzantine

Image
Early Christian and Byzantine This week we learned about the early Christian and Byzantine interior design. The book says that "compared the legacy of Greece and Rome, the world of the early Christians ard the Byzantines are less early grasped because they lack the stylistic cohesiveness of the preceding periods" The terms early Christian and Byzantine are not synonymous but they are related.  Early Christians  Basilica: Modern Churches"  This Church and Basilica are obviously different in many ways. the chich is more modern, it has more rooms and can hold more people. But the general concept of having a building with a large open space with no coulnms is the same. They wanted to be able to gather together and worship in one big open space. Early Church Baptistery: Modern Day Baptisory: There are two different types of modern-day Baptisory. One that looks to the past and is very ornamental and one that is very minimal and just meant to get the job done. The more or...

Week 3- Classical Civilizations

Image
Classical Civilizations This week we learned about two of the Classical Civilizations, Greece and Rome. In the Greece section of the reading, we learned a lot about the temples and their design. In the Roman part, we learned about many different things such as artifacts found, people's homes, shops, and places of worship. Greece The Greek Civilization what the bringing of Western ideas and culture. They were masters of philosophy, science, fine arts, geography, medicine, legal systems, and astronomy. Because of all of these things Greek architecture and design were grand and beautiful. It is still studied today. Greek Temple  Modern Chruch The Greek Temple was grand and had many columns and was crafted beautifully. Modern churches tend to have less thought put into the beauty of the church and more about its function. There are some similarities. Modern churches tend to use columns to make them feel more grand and they all point up to heaven which is similar to the Gre...

Week 2 Ancient Civilizations

Image
Ancient Civilizations This week we learned about some of the ancient civilizations. the book mostly focuses on Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Nubia. We have all heard of Egypt and Mesopotamia from the bible.  But Nubia was a new one for me. So it was cool to learn about it! Egypt  Egypt is most known for its monuments the the kings, the pyramids. But we learned the most about what was found in those pyramids. these things are tablets to give us a glimpse into their artwork and furniture. the oldest surviving pieces of furniture were found in the pyramids. The pieces of furniture I found the most interesting were their armchairs and Queen Hetepheres bed that were found.  Egyptian armchair:    Modern armchair: There are obvious similarities between the Egyptian chair and the armchairs we have today. they both have similar shapes, four legs, two arms, and a back. the differences are that the Egyptian chair has a much more elaborate design and the modern one is very ...

Week One- Pre-History

Image
Week One- Pre-History This week we learned about the Pre Historic time. the book talks about how this was a very interesting time. There was not a lot of built structure but people were still creative and designed things. Their homes were semi-permanent and mostly made out of either mud and thatch, stone, or a cave. One of the first times we see people decorating and making the space there is in the Lascaux Caves. This was a network of caves in France. These caves contained over 6,000 figures. This is really cool because we are able to see what people were able to do before modern techniques were invented! The picture below is a carving that was done in the caves of animals. Even though they had not figured out how to draw and paint in what looks like 3D they were able to carve in 3D! The next period we learned about was the Neolithic period. This is the time of history when you see the big stones sticking out of the ground like in Stonehenge. This is actually called a Menhirs wh...
