Week 9- Spanish Renaissance

Image
Spanish Renaissance This week we learned about the Spanish Renaissance. This was a period where art and culture were flushed in Spain. It happened mostly in the 15th and 16 centuries. Similar to the Italian Renaissance there was a revival of classical art and architecture. It was also influenced in many ways by the Italian Renaissance.  Alhambra Gardens  Modern Gardens  For this comparison, I wanted to find a modern-style garden with a vibe similar to the  Alhambra Gardens. They both have very vertical elements down the center that lead the eye to the focal point (the  Alhambra at the top and the couch at the bottom.) The modern Garden has very sharp and straight lines while in the other gardens, there are some arches and the plants are not as picture perfect. Another thing I noticed is that there is not a lot of color in the modern-day garden. There are really only green plants and grey stone and furniture. This just shows how the type now leans away from using...

Week 8- Italian Renaissance-Neoclassic

Image
Italian Renaissance-Neoclassic This week we learned about the Renaissance and Neoclassic or Baroque architecture. The book says "The Renaissance had many influences, but foremost it as its name implies, was a historic revival. Renaissance literally means rebirth and revival. " during this time building designs followed this logic. "The Baroque period is known for its convergence of patronage and prodigious artistic talent." Renaissance Bedroom Modern Bedroom The fancy bedroom from the Renaissance only the rich could afford. These rooms were very elegant and had very expensive furnishings. Nowadays most people can afford a nice bedroom. Products are now easier to access and cheaper. I chose to compare these two rooms because they have very similar furnishings. The beds have the same style except the modern one is very minimalistic. they also both have chairs and dressers in the. One thing that is still pretty common is that the chests/dressers are still made from woo...

Week 7- The Americas/ China and India

Image
The Americas/China and India This week we read two different chapters. Chapter 7 is about Americans and Chapter 8 is about China and India. The being of Chapter 7 says, "This chapter represents the deficit and an attempt to address that deficit, namely, the role of indigenous American architecture and objects in a history of design. Chapter 8 says, " India and China play major roles in Asian history, Both for their geographic heft and large populations. Americans  Eary Homes in the Americas  Modern-day Homes I compared these homes. These were typical homes in the early Americas. they were huts made of mud and they had thatched roofs. These are different from the typical homes we have not. these are now made of light wood construction and have shingled roofs. The reason for this change was the new technologies that were created and the want for comfort.  Stairs at Machu Picchu Modern-day stairs Stairs nowadays are very different than they were back then. Staircases now wil...

Week 6- Gothic

Image
Gothic This week we learned about Gothic Architecture and Intoer design. There was a lot going on in history at this time,  Popes had immense power and there was Wealth and power in the church. Religious expression heart of design.  Large numbers required large worship spaces and people wanted these spaces to be beautifully designed. Gothic R ibbed Arches Modern day Ribbed Arches In this beautiful building they used the concept of ribbed arches that were created in Gothic period. It takes a modern twist of the arch and uses the shape and lines to empaise the curve of the arch. Silver Throne of King Martin  Moder day "Throne" Both of these thrones are ornate. But the Gothic one is has much more design to it. Also with the invention of fabric and cutions the chair is much more comfortable. This shows the want for comfort in our society. Gothic Rose window  Modern twist on the rose window I think that this window that we saw used a lot in the 1990s is s...

Week 5- Romanesque/Islamic

Image
Romanesque/Islamic This week we learned about Romanesque/Islamic interior design. The book says, "For many people, Romanesque is not a place for of the more fluid Gothic that followed, it is the style the revere most." Islamic design is still going on. The style is still used today.  Charlemagne's throne Modern-day Chair  I decided to compare these two chairs because they have similar shapes. Also, the one on top is where the Leader in that area sits and if we had this chair in my house my dad would sit in this chair all the time and he is the leader of our house so I just made that connection. The modern chair has a throne likeness to it. But it is just more comfortable than the Romanesque thone.  Romanesque Art Modern Art The art back then vers that art now is drastically different. For one they had not figured out how to make things look 3D yet. Also, I love this modern example because it used the computer to create it. It shows how far art has come since t...
