Week 8- Italian Renaissance-Neoclassic

Italian Renaissance-Neoclassic

This week we learned about the Renaissance and Neoclassic or Baroque architecture. The book says "The Renaissance had many influences, but foremost it as its name implies, was a historic revival. Renaissance literally means rebirth and revival. " during this time building designs followed this logic. "The Baroque period is known for its convergence of patronage and prodigious artistic talent."

Renaissance Bedroom

Modern Bedroom

The fancy bedroom from the Renaissance only the rich could afford. These rooms were very elegant and had very expensive furnishings. Nowadays most people can afford a nice bedroom. Products are now easier to access and cheaper. I chose to compare these two rooms because they have very similar furnishings. The beds have the same style except the modern one is very minimalistic. they also both have chairs and dressers in the. One thing that is still pretty common is that the chests/dressers are still made from wood. This is something that I don't think will ever change.

Renaissance painting

Modern painting

Both of these paintings are hung inside a space and are meant to be an eye-catcher. But they are both very different paintings. the one above has a lot of details and it looks like the people are poping off the page. The modern painting is also pretty in its own way but it is way simpler. the artist to this may have a meaning behind it but it is abstract. it is made out of simple shapes and bright colors. This is another example of how as a society we are drawn towards simple things.

Dining room back then

Modern dining room

I think that these large banquet tables that many dining rooms have were also very popular during that time. Most Rich people had them so They could host large amounts of people. now you see them most when there is a family with a lot of kids and they need a lot of seats. Also, both of these images are aesthetically pleasing at the time they were made but at other times they might look too outdated or boring.

Baroque armchair

Both of these chairs were built for comfort. they both are padded and have arms that are shaped for your body to sit in perfectly. But they are different still. Obviously, the top one is more ornate and the bottom one is simple with clean lines. But it is cool to think about how people back then would sit in a chair like this and nowadays we sit in chairs the like second one to have a conversation or read a book.

One Step Further

This week I decided to focus on a different form of art, fashion design. I thought it would be cool to pull in other types of design because we can also learn from them. I looked into Alexander Mcqueen and his line called, Angels and Demons.

Lee Alexander McQueen was a British fashion designer and couturier. He founded his own Alexander McQueen label in 1992 and was chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001.

His line called Angles and Demons was heavily inspired by the Renaissance era. Here are some examples of this collection.

Comments

  1. I love how you drew connections between Renaissance and modern design, showing how elegance and functionality have evolved while still holding onto timeless elements like wooden furniture. The focus on Alexander McQueen's "Angels and Demons" collection as a blend of fashion and historical art adds an intriguing layer to your post—great job!

  3. Bethany,
This was a very interesting Blog entry to me. You showed some great examples of interiors and furniture that was introduced and available to the wealthy of this time. The contrast you gave us in the modern interiors and furniture that contains many of the same items , but are available to many people, was interesting. The simplicity of modern design is very apparent as we contrast it to this design era. I wonder if the tide will eventually turn back toward a more extravagant style?
Your look into Alexander Mcqueen and his line called, Angels and Demons was fascinating. 50/50 Points
