Week 6- Gothic

Gothic

This week we learned about Gothic Architecture and Intoer design. There was a lot going on in history at this time, Popes had immense power and there was Wealth and power in the church. Religious expression heart of design. Large numbers required large worship spaces and people wanted these spaces to be beautifully designed.

Gothic Ribbed Arches

Modern day Ribbed Arches
In this beautiful building they used the concept of ribbed arches that were created in Gothic period. It takes a modern twist of the arch and uses the shape and lines to empaise the curve of the arch.

Silver Throne of King Martin

Moder day "Throne"
Both of these thrones are ornate. But the Gothic one is has much more design to it. Also with the invention of fabric and cutions the chair is much more comfortable. This shows the want for comfort in our society.

Gothic Rose window

Modern twist on the rose window

I think that this window that we saw used a lot in the 1990s is simalr to the idea of the rose window. they were put in the peek of roofs or over door way to let light in higher up in the building. they made them into an half circle to add astetic.

One Step Further
Santiago Calatrava

Santiago Calatrava is a modern architect known for blending Gothic elements into his designs. His work, such as the Milwaukee Art Museum, showcases striking, winged structures that evoke Gothic vaulting, often incorporating expansive glass windows to enhance natural light and offer a contemporary twist on the style.

  1. Beth, I love the modern versions of the different things. Its so cool to see the differences from then to now but also how similar they still are.

  2. Great job! I liked how you added furniture, I didn't even think of that! Also, a rose window in a residential building, so cool! Also, for your one step further, I believe I have been to Santiago Calatrava's World Trade Center Transportation Hub (the last photo) in New York, and it was quite literally breathtaking!

  4. Beth- Providing an introduction that reminded us of the powerful influence of the Pope and church at this time was important. Your examples of current and historical applications of the ribbed arch, Gothic throne and Rose Window were excellent. Your image of the modern application of the Rose Window was great.
