Week 9- Spanish Renaissance

Spanish Renaissance

This week we learned about the Spanish Renaissance. This was a period where art and culture were flushed in Spain. It happened mostly in the 15th and 16 centuries. Similar to the Italian Renaissance there was a revival of classical art and architecture. It was also influenced in many ways by the Italian Renaissance.

Alhambra Gardens

Modern Gardens

For this comparison, I wanted to find a modern-style garden with a vibe similar to the Alhambra Gardens. They both have very vertical elements down the center that lead the eye to the focal point (the Alhambra at the top and the couch at the bottom.) The modern Garden has very sharp and straight lines while in the other gardens, there are some arches and the plants are not as picture perfect. Another thing I noticed is that there is not a lot of color in the modern-day garden. There are really only green plants and grey stone and furniture. This just shows how the type now leans away from using a lot of color.

Cathedral of Seville Gate

Driveway Gate

The Gate in this Cathedral and a driveway gate have the same purpose as most gates do, Let in the people who are supposed to be in and keep people who are not supposed to be there out. But these gates are similar esthetically as well. The driveway gate is a much simpler version but you can see how the inspiration was drawn from gates like this.

Spaninsh Renaissace Door

Modern-day doors

The common trend there is that the things we design today are much more minimalistic than things designed back then. Doors follow that same path. The doorways back then were a statement piece. Modern doorways can also be a statement piece but more often than not they are just simple doors. The cool thing that I noticed though was that both doors are made out of wood. even thought they are hundreds of years apart they are still using the same materials!

One Step Further
Jose Rafael Moneo Valles is a Spanish architect. He won the Pritzker Prize for architecture in 1996, the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 2003, and La Biennale's Golden Lion in 2021. He takes a lot of his inspiration from the building built during the Spanish Renaissance. "Rafael Moneo believes good architecture must be innovative but rooted in its place"

  4. Bethany,
What a great way to approach this topic. Your comparison or the modern day garden and the Alhambra was so intriguing to me. The modern garden seems so flat- almost 2-D compared to the Alhambra which included such great texture and so much more variety in color and shape.
The gate comparison was also great to see. For a deeper dive Jose Rafael Moneo Valles was an excellent architect to study. Thanks for the great images. 50/50 points
